A Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone, and I am finally back from a long hiatus. As a peace offering to those who have checked back on my site (number: unknown, so a few hints of you lurkers’ existence would be welcome), I come bearing a blog entry on herbs.

No flowers for me! I just had to buy a few of these Medusa Chilis, which are as hot as the regular chilis but are these fabulous purple when ready for the picking!

teeny red peppers!

Oh, look at what we have hiding here! Mini red bell peppers just growing in its teeny pots.

I recently got the chance to visit The Flower Farm in Barrio Guinhawa, Tagaytay City. But wait, it wasn’t the flowers that got me swooning - though the greenhouse upon greenhouse of multi-hued gerberas and roses would - it was the herbs!

For a minimal fee, our little group got relaxed tour of the seven-hectare farm which supplies most of Metro Manila’s flowers.

Anyway, back to the herbs. If you’ve been reading up my past blog entries, you know how difficult it is to find herbs in pots in Metro Manila. But maybe you are up for a few hours’ drive, or maybe you are just chancing by Tagaytay … then it would be great to pay a visit to The Flower Farm to get your stash of herbs.

purple basil

I heart purple basil

While from friends were going gaga over the orchids and the flowers, the woody rosemary shrubs, obviously thriving in the Tagaytay weather, filled me with envy (because between husband and me, we’ve murdered too many plants to count on our fingers and toes). When we entered the herb section, it wasn’t a sparse collection of a few straggling plants, it was a veritable herb paradise.

oooohh, lavender!
I just love the smell of lavender!

While the prices are a little on the steep side (P100 for a chili plant - discounted to P80 because we bought several, P150 for a rosemary plant), the fact that they are so luxuriant and were established in their little plastic containers was enough to convince me to buy a few.

A nice bonus of our little trip was a quick lesson on how to pot herbs, with a few tricks on how to combine different materials so you have an optimum potting mix.

Contact them before swinging on over. Everything is by appointment. The appointment is well worth keeping!
